Summer School for Young Professionals 2010

Centre for European and North Atlantic Affairs (CENAA) in dates 26th June – 4th July organized the fifth international Summer School for Young Professionals 2010. More than thirty students of political sciences and international relations gathered in the Armed Forces Academy of General M.R.Štefánik in Liptovský Mikuláš, where they were received by Vice-Rector of the Armed Forces Academy, Col. Pavel Nečas, Ms. Susan Ball, Deputy Chief of the Mission, Representative of US Embassy in Slovakia and Radoslav Javorčík, Director of Security Policy Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the Summer School Slovak and international experts for security and defence policy provided the participants with interactive discussions and workshops. Through a video channel with NATO PDD the students had the opportunity to discuss and ask questions about NATO mission in Afghanistan with experts based in NATO in Brussels.

After 5 days the Summer School traditionally moved to Uzhorod in Ukraine, where Ukrainian experts briefed participants with foreign policy of this partner country and worrying aspects of NATO – Ukraine relations. On the way to Ukraine, students from V4 countries, Romania, Serbia, the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Azerbaijani, Armenia, Georgia and Ukraine also visited the Helicopter Wing in Prešov, one of three air bases of the Air Forces of the Slovak Republic.

The importance of the project, whose main aim is to prepare young professionals from partner countries in troubling regions for their future leadership positions in defence and security sector in their countries, is increasing, as negotiations over participating countries membership in NATO are processing further.

Summer School has been organized with financial support of NATO PDD, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, American Embassy to Slovakia and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Second edition of Transatlantic files (strategic studies)

Analysis of foreign policy and security policy documents and goals of political parties in Slovakia

Centre for European and North Atlantic Affairs (CENAA) issued an analysis of foreign policy documents and goals of most relevant political parties in Slovakia (ĽS-HZDS, KDH, Most-Híd, SaS, SDKÚ-DS, SMER-SD, SMK-MKP, SNS).

CENAA´s research team focused mainly on the European Union, NATO, regional – Central European relations, the USA, Russia and other important global actors of international relations, as well as issues of hard and soft security, includig specific topics, as energy security.

The analysis has 42 pages, the authors are researchers and external contributors of CENAA: Samuel Arbe, Andrej Nosko, Róbert Ondrejcsák a Veronika Zimanová.

First edition of CENAA´s new journal, Transatlantic files (strategic studies)

Centre for European and North Atlantic Affairs (CENAA) issued first edition of Transatlantic files (strategic studies), a new electronic journal in the field of international relations and security policy. The first edition contains three papers about NATO´s new Strategic Concept, from different perspectives. The authors are from Ministry of Defence. We believe, that they are providing comprehensive view on current discussion about that issue. The fourth paper has been written by Russian expert on Afghanistan. He is analyzing the new Pakistani approach towards the Taliban.

Presentation of CENAA´s new publication about integration experiences

Centre for European and North Atlantic Affairs (CENAA), in cooperation with Slovak Agency for International Development Cooperation (SlovakAid) organised a presentation of CENAA´s new publication about Slovak integration experiences at premises of SÚZA on 28. April 2010.

Authors: Elemír Nečej (ed.), Peter Brezáni, Michal Kovács, Grigorij Mesežnikov, Peter Rusiňák, Ivo Samson, Tomáš Siviček, Vladimír Tarasovič, Vladimír Vladár. The publication is one of outcomes of CENAA´s research project (”Experience sharing and the European and Euro-Atlantic integration procedures”) supported by MFA SR. It analyzes experiences of most relevant Slovak NGO´s (EAC, IVO, PONTIS, SAC-ATA, SFPA a CENAA) from experience sharing and transition projects, as well as European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

4th Slovak Strategic Forum (26.-27. March 2010)

Centre for European and North Atlantic Affairs (CENAA) organized the 4th Slovak Strategic Forum (Žilina, 26.-27. March 2010). The SSF is an exclusive forum of distinguished experts from MFA, MoD, Parliament, think-tanks, NGOs and academics. It is organised by CENAA annually. The main goal of the Forum is to discuss the most important and recent developments of international relations and European security, under Chatham House rules. Besides the discussion, formulation of Slovak positions towards up-to-date issues of European and global security, belongs to objectives of SSF.

Most important topics discussed on 4th Slovak Strategic Forum:
- Perspectives of „common European army“
- Evaluation of Slovak experiences from EU´s Battle Groups
- Exit strategy – the Balkans
- Exit strategy – Afganistan

Report from the Forum will be published at CENAA´s web, as well as distributed via our mailing list. In extended form it will be published in Panorama of Global Security Environment 2010.

Discussion clubs with students of University of Economy in Bratislava and University in Nitra

CENAA organised next round of events within series of discussion clubs about international relations and security policy. At premises of University of Economy in Bratislava Mr. Brieška of Slovak MFA (regular contributor to our Global Panorma) gave very interesting insights into Middle Eastern developments, on 25. March (in cooperation with EAC). CENAA´s director, Róbert Ondrejcsák discussed American foreign policy with students of University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra at same day.
The next round of discussions were organised in March, when Mr. Vladimír Tarasovič, CENAA´s Senior Research Fellow visited Nitra and discussed consequences of Russian-Georgian war. Mr. Ondrejcsák was a guest of University of Economy in Bratislava – the topic was the European Security Policy ofter the Lisboa Treaty.
Discussion clubs are organized three times in each semester at premises of the University of Economy in Bratislava and University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra. Students of international relations, European studies and political sciences from EU and UK are among the participants.

CENAA´s new publication about Slovak integration experiences

CENAA issued new publication about experiences of most important Slovak NGO´s with experience-sharing in the field of NATO and EU integration. The publication has six chapters: each chapter is focusing on specific activities of one NGO. Besides individual activities of Slovak organisations, there are databases of already launched activities, issued publications as well as experts. CENAA´s expert, Mr. Elemír Nečej is the editor of the publication.

Panorama 2010 – Call for proposals

The Centre for European and North Atlantic Affairs (CENAA) has launched activities on the seventh edition of Global Panorama. We are awaiting your proposals not later than March, 20th. The deadline for papers is 1st August 2010.
The proposal has to include at least the title of the paper, definition of the topic and basic content. We will inform all potential authors about the status of his/her proposal not later than at the end of March. The recommended length of final paper is max. 30 000 signs, including references.

We will put emphasis on NATO´s new Strategic Concept, future perspectives of Visegrad/Vysehrad/Central European cooperation, Eastern Europe including Russia, development in Afghanistan and broader region, the Middle East, as well as specific issues connected with the Euro-Atlantic area and neighboring regions. Moreover, we also welcome topics covering other regions or phenomena, including East and South Asia, Latin America or Africa. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any specific proposal or topic to discuss.
